Ship Arrivals at the Port of Quebec, 1829

The following information on arrivals, due to the condition of the papers, has been taken from various sources including the Montreal Gazette MG, Montreal Herald MH, and the Canadian Courant & Montreal Advertiser CC.
note: if ships' rigging or name of Master unpublished, it is indicated by -- (The newspapers were often filmed within their binding, making one side of some entries, unreadable, or only partly legible. This can lead to errors in the interpretation of the entry or missed entries. ) Be aware that there may be two or more ships of the same name, from the same, or different ports, during the same year. A few ships also made two trips in 1829.

note: There seems to be under-reporting by the Montreal Gazette, of the numbers' of settlers and names of cabin passengers on vessels arriving at Quebec for the year 1829, so do not conclude that any such vessel did not carry passengers.

Emigrants to Illinois.
About 150 emigrants from Yorkshire, who arrived at Quebec from England a week ago, have set out for the State of Illinois, via Montreal. A number of them had agricultural implements and some money.
[see the bark Triton, arrived at Quebec May 30th, from Hull . . . those passengers probably aboard steamboat Chambly from Quebec to Montreal on June 2nd]

Segar Smoking.
Two respectable dressed females were seen leaving a bonnet-maker's shop in this town, one evening last week, and each of them was puffing away like the crater of a volcano. This is too much for human endurance. There has lately arisen amongst us a kind of Segar Mania, with which men, women and even children are affected ; not from any pleasure, and still less from any benefit, real or imaginary, which smoking affords them, but they consider it as doing the genteel thing. Even on a Sunday Mr. Tape's apprentices cannot stroll a hundred yards on the Humber Bank, without a few inches of tobacco stuck in their mouths ! Every urchin now, forsooth, must have his " steam up, " and as the fairer sex are, it seems, resolved to adopt the same plan, we prophecy hot work during the ensuing winter.— Hull Packet
The Duke of Rutland, the other day, having been annoyed by some of the contemptible swells who frequent St. James street, smoking cigars, determined to send out a living satire on the unbecoming practice. Accordingly he directed a footman and groom to mount their cigars in the full livery of his illustrious house, and they were ordered to parade the street for a couple of hours. The hit was felt — it was palpable — and in a short time there was not a dandy to be seen in the district.

Among the Emigrants who have arrived this season, we observe a more respectable class of farmers than in former years. Most of them possess considerable property. The majority of them proceed to Upper Canada, to join their friends and relations, and particularly to the Newcastle district where arrangements we are informed have been made for their reception. Out of 150 persons from Yorkshire, arrived in one vessel, two families from a predilection in favour of Prairie land, have gone to the Illinois Territory, and one to Wheeling in Ohio, to join their friends.
Those who may not be prepared to go immediately upon lands, will find employment as work is plentiful. At the King's works on the cape and the Rideau Canal Labourers are wanted, at the latter place 1000 labourers are advertised for. This is certainly the time when settlements in Lower Canada may be more conveniently carried into effect, than at any former period. We understand that arrangements are making to examine the townships of Inverness, Leeds, and the adjoining settlements, on Craig's road, for the purpose of determining Emigrants to proper situations.— Star

A young lad on board the Nailer, Capt. McColl, named Brunner, and son of one of the Tellers of the Greenock Bank, met his death yesterday, in going down to the ship's half-deck, by falling into the hold on his head ; every attention was instantly afforded, but life was almost immediately extinct.

On Friday morning about seven o'clock, a seaman belonging to the ship Tottenham, Captain Evans, was saved from drowning by the dexterity as a swimmer of Mr. Charles Campbell of the firm of Sheppard & Campbell. Mr. Campbell himself most narrowly escaped drowning on the occasion, the man having firmly grasped him round the neck, and having also deprived Mr. Campbell of the use of one arm, that gentleman was thus brought under water, and it was with the utmost difficulty they reached a log and resting on it, their lives were saved. It is due to the benevolence of Mr. Campbell to record that his expertness and intrepidity have enabled him at different times to rescue nine persons from a similar fate.— Star

We understand that the Steam-boat John Molson, on her last trip to this port, made a remarkably quick passage, which is well deserving of public notice. She left Quebec at three quarters past two o'clock on Friday morning, and arrived at Montreal the same evening at eleven o'clock, being only twenty hours and a quarter on the way. From this however, one hour and a half should be deducted for the detention at Three-Rivers and William Henry [Sorel], which leaves only eighteen hours and three quarters of actual running. This, we are assured, is the shortest run ever made by a Steam-boat between Quebec and Montreal, without the aid of sails.

Shipping Intelligence.—
It appears by Halifax papers, that part of the articles taken from the house where the crew [and passengers] of the Granicus died, had been carried to Cheticamp (Cape Breton) St. Pierre (Miquelon) and other places. To Cheticamp, books with the name of Richard Monaghan were taken.

Extract of a Letter in Neilson's Gazette, 25th June, 1829, Signed "Stat."
" There is only one case in which ' the French part ' of Lower Canada would submit to the partial sacrifice of their language. It would be a case similar to that which occurred in the neighbouring Province of Louisiana, where there was a French population not one twentieth part of Lower Canada. This was a Union with the United States of America. They might see the necessity and the real benefit of a change under similar circumstances. It would be no longer ' conquerors ' uselessly and insultingly, contrary to public faith exacting from their fellow subjects the sacrifice or degradation of their mother tongue ; but a voluntary desire to forward amalgamation with fellow citizens of the same vast republic, made up of the descendants of all European nations, neither claiming or enjoying unequal rights, advantages or superiority over each other. In the Thames, sailed on the 1st instant, Mrs. Symes senior.

Shipping Intelligence.—
The schooner Ann, Capt. Robinson, arrived yesterday, brought up the Register and Log book of the the Brig Betsy, hence for Tralee, 16th October 1827, and which had never been heard of. These articles, together with the skeletons of six men, one of which had evidently been the Captain (Carroll), were found at Itamamion, upper end of Labrador, by a party of Esquimaux Indians hunting last spring. No vestige of the vessel remained.
. . . . There is no appearance that the people had been able to make fire, and it was manifest that instead of seeking to find inhabitants, they hid themselves. The is always the case with English sailors who are wrecked upon this coast ; they take it for granted that there are no inhabitants but Indians, ready to murder them without mercy, while in truth there are few or no Indians either on the Labrador coast or on that of Newfoundland, and these far from being cruel, are the most inoffensive people on earth, who would perform any office of humanity to persons in distress. Under this impression the unfortunate crew of the Betsy, no doubt, died of cold and hunger almost at the door of ready assistance, being within a mile of a hunting stand attached to the post of Itamamion, in which were a stove and other articles which must have shewn them that houses were not far off.
It would be necessary that all the captains of vessels trading to Quebec should be informed, that inhabitants scattered along the whole North coast of the Gulf of St. lawrence, and that in case of shipwreck, on whatever part of the coast, it is only necessary, when the crew has got ashore, immediately to proceed along the beach, either to the right or the left, no matter which, and they cannot go far without meeting houses and people, who would not only render every possible personal assistance, but might likewise often be conducive to saving the vessel and cargo . . . .

Emigrants.—
Nearly sixty families are about to emigrate from the parish of Comrie to Canada, causing a reduction of from two hundred to three hundred on the amount of its population.— Caledonian Mercury

Settlement of the Country.— We are informed, that, since the middle of June, thirty Emigrant families of some respectability and several of them possessing property, from Scotland, the North of England, and Ireland, have been located in Inverness and Leeds. About 20 families of Highlanders, consisting of 150 persons from the Isle of Arran, who arrived some time ago at Montreal, have after diligent investigation, selected the Township of Inverness to settle in. Arrangements, we understand, are making for their reception ; and the whole with their farming implements, are expected from Montreal, the beginning of next week, when they will immediately proceed to the new settlement on Lake Joseph in the Township above-mentioned. Other families are expected to join them from the Island of Arran, and some parts of Argyleshire, but particularly from the estates of the Duke of Hamilton, who has taken a deep interest in behalf of those among his industrious tenantry who were disposed to emigrate to Canada. Families we have been informed, are daily settled in Stoneham, and some in Frampton ; and the situation of Leeds and Inverness is so highly spoken of, that many of the lots are expected to be taken up this season.— Star

An instance of expeditious travelling is mentioned in the Herald, which is deserving of notice. A party of six left St. John's [Quebec] on the 25th ultimo, at one o'clock, and reached Whitehall the following morning at five. They left Whitehall in the stage, and arrived at Troy, a distance of 68 miles, in seven hours and fifty-seven minutes, and at Albany before four o'clock. The party were to proceed to New York in the steam boat Ohio at five, and would in all probability complete their journey of 370 miles in 38 hours from the time of their leaving St. Johns.

The Season.—
The weather has been very unsettled for the last ten or twelve days, sunshine and heavy showers alternately visiting us every day. The crops of grain are upon the whole as good as might be expected ; hay is an abundant crop, and in several places the mowing has been commenced, but such weather is very prejudicial to its being housed in good order.— Neilson's Quebec Gazette, June 16

The Majestic, from Belfast, has arrived, after some weeks passage, with 350 settlers. As there are reports in circulation that fever to a considerable extent existed on board, we have made enquiry, and find that two grown persons died on the passage ; but that they were ordinary cases, and there is not the slightest cause for alarm. One or two cases of inflammation have been admitted into the Emigrant Hospital from this vessel, but they are not of any consequence. One of the remaining children infected with small pox is dead, the other doing well.
