Eight vessels arrived to-day-not reported.
The following names of the Passengers, in the vessels lately arrived,
are all we have been able to learn:
On board the Sir James Kempt, Mrs Cockburn, widow
of the late J. Cockburn, Esq. Mr and Mrs Rivers, all 18.
Ship Lynx, Capt. Let, 26th regt. lady,
and 3 children; Mr Nichols, and 22 settlers.
Canada, Mr D. Smith.
Quebec Packet, Mr Robinson.
_________ Mr G. Spratt, Mr R. Orkney, Mr Haddan, Mr Isaac Wilson.
Mr Symes, of the firm of Symes & Woolrich.
Alligater, Mr Stewart.
120 settlers arrived in the Æolus.
Mr Adams, who surveyed the Chambly Canal, is now occupied similarly
with the Lachine.
Mr Clinton has been re-elected Governor of the State of New York.
The Ship Alligator, Captain Madick, from Waterford,
wrecked near L'Islette, had on board 400 tons salt, 15 casks glassware,
50 boxes fig blac? 10 do black thread. There were 40 steerage and
a few cabin passengers on board-several women and children among
the former. After striking, she filled so very fast, that the unfortunate
crew and passengers had time to save nothing but what was on their
backs: they were hurried and crowded into the boats, surrounded
with the gloomy appearance of the contending elements; the weather
so thick as to conceal the land.
The English March Mail arrived this morning. (Quebec Mercury
of May 19, 1820)
On Wednesday evening, the Transport Ship Abeona,
Captain Pritchard, drove on the rocks at Wolfe's Cove, and is very
much injured. She was waiting for a fair wind to sail for England;
having on board a number of soldiers of different corps, whose time
of service has expired.
The Brig Minerva, Captain Morgan, (of which mention was
made in our last) was from Liverpool, bound to Montreal, and had
a valuable cargo of liquors and dry goods, consigned to Messrs.
Forsyth, Richardson & Co.

We are sorry to understand that the Small-pox is making
great ravages, both in this City and at Montreal; and we have every
reason to apprehend that its poisonous sting is not exclusively limited
to these two places in the Province. It is much to be lamented that
our Legislature should have thought it expedient not to renew the
salutary provisions, offered to the public by the Vaccine Board-whatever
might have been the errors committed by that institution, the public
good resulting from it ought to have overweighed every other consideration.

Drowned, on Saturday last, near the Steam Boat Wharf,
at Point Levy, Peter Doyle, a native of Ireland,
aged 25 years. He was in a boat with two others, which was driven
by the current against the above brig. Doyle, who held an oar to prevent
the boat from striking against the vessel, was thrown over-board the
moment they tacked. The two others were left without any oar or paddle;
and notwithstanding the unfortunate man remained about five minutes
upon the surface of the water, crying for help, he disappeared without
their being able to give him any assistance.
Among the lamentable failures of our times, may be considered the
want of vaccine matter for inoculation. In vain has the discovery
been made, if it be rendered abortive for want of the means of carrying
it into effect. We know not where the fault lies, but we trust that
it is not to be imputed to want of efforts on the part of the faculty.
That dreadful scourge, the small pox, is known to be spreading among
us; it is no less known that there is a preventative in nature;
but, alas! it is not at hand.
