Return to SA Passenger Lists,1847-1886

HMS Hercules, 74 guns, Captain Baynton, from Campbeltown, Scotland 26th December 1852 / Cork, Ireland 14th April 1853, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 26th July 1853. (the following day, HMS Hercules sailed for Melbourne with the remaing 183 passengers, arriving 1st August 1853. On 11th August 1853, she sailed for Hong Kong, via Sydney) (lithograph of Hercules at Campbeltown)

The Highlands & Islands Emigration Society arranged for the emigration of more than 4,000 persons 1852-1854. The original plan for the Hercules passengers, intended that they sail from Portree, Isle of Skye, however, they finally sailed from Campbeltown, in Argyllshire. An outbreak of small-pox and typhus required an extended stay in quarantine at Cork, after which many of the emigrants were assigned to other ships.
This passenger list is of those who disembarked at Port Adelaide. To learn the names and details of those who proceeded to Melbourne, visit these off-site websites, HIES at http://www.angelfire.com/ns/bkeddy/HIES/hercules.html and the Virtual Vault at http://www.scan.org.uk/researchrtools/emigration.htm The websites indicated, also name the emigrants from the original group, of over seven hundred and fifty, who subsequently arrived in Australia aboard other ships.
