Algemeene Stoomvaart
Maatschappij, Rotterdam 1914-1924
The shipbrokers firm of Wambersie & Zoon founded in
1914 Algemeene Stoomvaart Maatschappij at Rotterdam and ordered three
fruit carriers with passenger accommodation from British yards, the first
two ships were delivered to the company and the third the steamer VAN
STIRUM was seized by the British government due to World War One.
The ships carried passengers and mostly bananas from the Dutch Colony
Surinam to Rotterdam.
This was not a great success due the inferiority of the Surinam bananas
and World War 1 and the ships were sold in 1917 to Atlantic
Fruit Company.
In 1921 three cargo ships were ordered from Dutch yards with the prefix
SLOT but in 1924 the Algemeene Stoomvaart Maatschappij was liquidated
and the three cargo ships were sold to the Middellandsche Zeevaart Compagnie
also in Rotterdam.
Many thanks to Henk Jungerius and Ted Finch for their assistance
