The Fleets

Canadian Steamship Company

It was announced in Nov. 1898 that the Canadian SS Co. would be establishing a service between Milford Haven, Wales and Paspebiac in the Gaspe Peninsular, Quebec, which was claimed to be ice free and from where the Atlantic & Lake Superior Railway would take passengers to Montreal and other stations.
The service was started by the GASPESIA which sailed from Milford Haven on 7th Dec. 1898 with a large number of passengers. It was intended that the PASBEBIAC would follow, and that three other 17 knot vessels which were undergoing overhaul would be ready by the spring of 1899 when a weekly service would operate.
The GASPESIA started a second voyage from Liverpool via Milford Haven to Paspebiac on 8th Jan. 1899 and reached her destination, but on the homeward voyage she was trapped in iceflows near Magdalene Island for two months. She then returned to St. John's NF for supplies and eventually returned to the U.K. Nothing further was heard from her on the North Atlantic. North German Lloyd arranged to sell the WERRA, FULDA and EMS to this company, but the sales were not completed. Nothing further was heard of the Canadian SS Co.

Many thanks to Ted Finch for his assistance in collecting this data. The following list was extracted from various sources. This is not an all inclusive list but should only be used as a guide.
