Asked Questions
The Fleets Ellermans comprised a
group of several companies and each will be treated as a seperate entity. Montgomerie & Workman Commenced shipowning in 1855 as Montgomerie & Greenhorne (Greenhorne was one of the Allan Line Masters). In 1877 with the death of Alexander Greenhorne, the company became Montgomerie & Workman. Sailing ships were operated until J. R. Ellerman took over the fleet in 1901 and introduced steamships. The management was gradually merged with City Line but ships were still registered as owned by Montgomerie & Workman until 1936 when the remaining ships were transferred to Ellerman Lines Ltd.
