note: the notation of Waterloo "running with the Lady of the Lake" refers to the Waterloo being ordered to run "head-to-head" with the Lady of the Lake, in a "fare-war," matching fare with fare ; cabin & steerage fares from Quebec to Montreal greatly reduced, with steerage fare dropping as low as sixpence (the regular steerage fare was ten shillings which is 20 times greater than sixpence). The Lady of the Lake belonged to a competitor, James Greenfield. ... During the navigation season, steerage fares even dropped to two pence [tuppence] and were then all over the place ; up to two shillings and sixpence ; down to one shilling and three pence ; down to seven-half pence [ -/-/7½ ] ; down to two pence ; up to seven-half pence
