Kingston Immigration Agent's Records of 1862

Canada did not archive passenger lists until 1865, a point which has often caused many a great deal of frustration. Recently, however, new material came to light at the Archives of Ontario which has given us valuable material for this pre-archive period. Granted, it will only help for 1862-1864 but that is more than we use to have. What you see here is only the 1862 data. The 1863-64 data will be transcribed and put on this site as well.

The following material has been extracted from the Archives of Ontario, Records of the Department of Immigration, RG 11, Series M, Vol 2, Kingston Agency 1862-1878, found on microfilm number MS847 Reel 6. This information is contained in a ledger kept by the Immigrant Agent at Kingston (who was Mr. Macpherson in 1862). The handwriting is small and hard to read but every effort has been made to transcribe it correctly. You will sometimes see a ? appear where some text was found difficult to read (we are still working on this to see if more can be gleaned from the manuscript).

The columns in the ledger were labelled:

  • Date of Landing
  • Name of Emigrant, or head of Family
  • From what Country
  • Via what Seaport Town
  • Destination
  • Condition, general appearance, health
  • No. of male Adults
  • No. of Female do.
  • No. under 4 years
  • No. over 4 years, and under 12
  • In what Township employed as Servants
  • In what Township settled, or bought land
  • Amount of Passage tickets issued
  • Amount of Provisions
  • Amount of Medical aid
  • Amount of Capital brought by them
  • General Remarks.

We have condensed this into fewer columns as many of them were blank. For example, the number of adults and children was put into one column labelled "Adults; Children." The last 7 columns were placed in the "Comments" column.

Sometimes you will find the name of a ship. The agent sometimes wrote this in but not always in the same column. On occasion it was in the "Via what Seaport Town" column but sometimes it was in the "From what Country" column. We have left it where we found it. Shipnames in bold. See also Ship arrivals to Quebec and Portland during the year 1862.

Originally, the idea was to sort the material alphabetically. However, this notion was short lived as the order was felt to be very important and because often comments were made about several people at once. If you find a match in this list you should consult the original microfilm.

On occasion you will see the names of Mr. Hawke, Immigrant Agent at Toronto, Mr. Daley, Immigrant Agent at Montreal and Mr. Rae, Immigrant Agent at Hamilton. Many of the immigrants traveled up the lake on steamers belonging the the Royal Mail Line. You will find some abreviations made by the agent, including:

  • GTRR - Grand Trunk Rail Road
  • Str - Steamer
