Monday morning, usually a full working day for the dockers, saw all ports of Great Britain seriously affected by the dock strike. Mails were held up, and the sailings of big ocean liners seriously affected. Food prices too, began to rise, calling forth a strongly worded notice from the Cabinet. A Court of Inquiry has already been set up by the Government to investigate the demand by the dockers for an increase of 2s a day. Of the 3,000 dockers affected at Southampton Docks (of which an aerial view is given above), only about 250 are in permanent employment, the remainder being casual labourers.
