The many arrivals at Quebec, furnish nothing later than what has
been received by way of the United States, and already noticed.
An article in the New York Advertisor of the 4th instant, mentions
the arrival of the Ontario from a cruise in the Pacific Ocean;
and that between Captain Biddle her commander and the well known
Lord Cochrane, now Admiral of the Chili fleet, there had been some
jarrings and symptoms of hostility: however nothing serious took
place. The nature of the dispute is not stated.
The great number of vessels already arrived at Quebec, this reason
(see list of arrivals) cannot but be gratifying to our readers;
we wish the sales would in some measure keep pace with the importations,
our propects would then be flattering indeed. It is to be hoped
that the Public Works, which, in all probability, will be begun
in the course of summer, will give a favourable impulse to trade,
and tend to remove the langour under which it now labours.
We learn there are about seventy souls, mostly Canadians, preparing
to set out from this place, the 25th instant, for Lord Selkirk's
Settlement on the River Rouge (Red River). The number of Settlers
there at this time, it is said, amounts to about five hundred. An
intelligent Canadian, in easy circumstances, with whom we conversed,
and who goes thither with the before mentioned Settlers, with all
his family, says he passed a winter there when engaged in the Fur
Trade, and reports it to be a fertile country, and the climate much
milder than that of Canada.--Thus, there is every appearance, that
this Colony, in the course of time, will become populous and flourishing.
