Return to SA Passenger Lists,1847-1886

barque Aurora, 536 tons, Captain Valentine Ryan, from Southampton 21st January 1856, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 22nd May 1856

9th ship from England to S.A. with government passengers for 1856 ; 3 births and 4 deaths on the passage ; Thomas Le Gay Holthouse , surgeon-superintendent.
The Aurora arrived on the 22nd May with 217 souls. She was commanded by Mr. Valentine Ryan, and Mr. T.L. Holthouse was the surgeon-superintendent. The immigrants, generally, were well selected.
In consequence of a complaint having been made of an insufficient issue of butter during the voyage, the Immigration Board sat to investigate the circumstances. It was clearly proved that, owing to some neglect, the quantity of butter which ought to have been shipped according to the provisions of the charterparty had not been put on board ; in consequence of which no butter was issued to the emigrants from the 29th April till the arrival of the ship.
The Immigration Board were of the opinion that carelessness was shown, and that the terms of the charterparty had not been fulfilled, so far as regarded the quantity of butter stipulated to be put on board, and they recommended that a sum equivalent to three times the value of the butter short shipped should be deducted from the payment of freight, and that the certificate on the ship's papers should be so far modified.
His Excellency the Governor-in-Chief was pleased to approve of the recommendation of the Board.
The surgeon-superintendent did his job very efficiently, and states that the master gave him every assistance.

The Passenger list clearly show the wife Jane, and 8 children travelling as a single parent, not as a family. This is supported by part of the passenger list headed Nominee-remittance, which shows Edwin John as the depositor of the money for the agreement to purchase land. Up to date I have been unable to find the arrival of Edwin John in this Colony, but I suspect he travelled at his brother's expense on a ship other than a Government assisted one. Edwin John's brother William and family arrived in 1849 aboard the Harry Lorrequer.
