MISCELLANEOUS SHIPPING. |
|
The City of Benares belongs to the celebrated City line which has so frequently of late sent here fine ships to carry our produce. The present vessel is a handsome ship of immense length, and evident power. She has immense spread of sail, and after being sighted on Sunday morning made short work of reaching the roads. She is in charge of Captain McDonald, who was here in the City of Vienna when that ship loaded wheat for England. Gravesend was left on September 25, and after continued moderate winds the craft crossed the line on October 28. The south-east trades were brisk, but failed in 20° south latitude, and until the passing of the meridian of Greenwich on November 21 in 41° 30' S. baffling winds were felt. Crossing the Southern Ocean was smart work unto coming in with, the land, when the wind headed the ship off to a bowline for a long period. She will be towed into harbour about Wednesday. The ship has brought about 50 passengers under the Superintendence of Dr. Park. They consist for the most part of artisans and families, but very few single people being on board, and their general conduct is extremely well spoken of by the master. Immediately on the vessel anchoring Dr. Duncan mustered the passengers, who were then free to leave.
The state of health during the passage was very satisfactory, not a serious case of sickness having occurred. The only domestic event was an addition to the population, which was named Fanny Benares Casson. The people look like hard workers, and no doubt employment will be readily obtained, |
