ship Europa
Arrived from Liverpool on the 12th day of May, bringing to the colony 342 souls. Seven births and one death were the casualties at sea. The ship itself was spacious and well ventilated. She was commanded by Mr. William Ridley and Mr. William Rutter was the surgeon-superintendent — this being his third voyage in charge of emigrants.
It appears that a mutiny amongst the sailors rendered it expedient for the master to touch at the Cape of Good Hope, when some of the ring-leaders were punished. Complaints were made by some of the immigrants chiefly regarding an alleged short issue of water. This was investigated by the Immigration Board but they came to the conclusion there was no foundation for the charge, and they were of opinion that the surgeon-superintendent had done his duty very efficiently under very trying circumstances. The young women by this ship were most unsuitable.

South Australian Register Monday 14th May 1855
The Government emigrant ship bringing 342 souls arrived at the lightship on Saturday, the 1st instant, after a passage of 101 days from Birkenhead and 37 days from the Cape of Good Hope, where she put in in consequence of the mutinous state of the crew, particulars of which will be found in another column. Only one death ensured during the voyage ; the births were seven in number.

Of the above number 160 are single females, and 31 single men. The industrial list shows that the following tradesman are comprised in the number on board:— Plasterers 4 ; Masons and Bricklayers 9 ; Joiners 18 ; Baker 1; Sawyers 8 ; Blacksmiths 6 ; schoolmaster 1 ; the male and female farm and domestic servants are 205 in number.
There has been no disease of a contagious character during the voyage, and at present only eight persons are on the list of invalids, those cases being slight attacks of bronchitis. The between decks are remarkably lofty — not less than nine feet — and the appearance of the ship speaks well for the cleanliness of the emigrants, who appear to be fine and healthy people.

Serious Mutiny at sea

On board the government emigrant ship Europa, which arrived on Saturday last, the 12th instant, from Birkenhead, a serious mutiny occurred. The following particulars of which are extracted from the official log-book, which was politely handed to our outside shipping reporter — “The origin of the mutiny arose through one of the apprentices who, having misconducted himself, was confined by the captain in the storeroom until he thought proper to apologize for his misconduct. The confinement of this boy so exasperated the crew that they, in a most daring and insolent manner demanded his release, and threatened that if the captain did not immediately accede to their wishes they would take him (the boy) by force.
The ringleaders, named Milligan and John Connell, after being told by the captain that the lad would have his liberty whenever he thought fit to apologies, used more threatening language, which induced the captain to prepare himself fore more serious results, he having also heard that the crew had been preparing sling-shots and other weapons for some days past, premeditating an attack on the officers.

On the 22nd March in lat. 40 deg. 46 min. S., 1 deg. 56 min E., Mr. Eastrook the chief officer went forward to issue instructions to the boatswain relative to putting the men of his watch to work, when three of the men came up armed and interfered. The chief officer, requesting them to mind their own duty and to go into the forecastle, was replied to by a blow from a slingshot in the back of the head, which brought him to the deck, the skull being laid bare by the shot, which penetrated the scalp.
Four of the ringleaders immediately walked aft on the starboard side of the main deck armed with sheath-knifes, iron belaying pins, and slung-shot, one having an iron handled knife in his girdle. The captain issued orders to the constables that were on deck to seize them, but they were repulsed in doing so by the knifes of the mutineers, who getting more daring, made a rush for the starboard poop ladder, attempting to gain possession of the poop, but fortunately for all on board the captain had previously got his first and second officers the carpenter, sail maker, and the boatswain armed with cutlasses and pistol.
Two of the most daring of ringleaders advanced up the poop deck. The captain then threatened to shoot the first man who put his foot on the poop, when two men named Milligan and Connell made several thrusts at the captain with their knifes, but fortunately their blows fell short. The second officer seeing these two men were holding on to the man-ropes of the poop ladder has the presence of mind to cut the ropes, when Milligan and Connell were precipitated backwards on to the main deck.
As soon as they recovered they ranged themselves side by side tore their shirts open, and dared the captain to fire, stating they were determined to take their lives (meaning the officers), at the same time hurling an iron belaying pin at the captains head, which missed its mark. An attempt was made with the same description of missiles to strike the boatswain, but this attempt also was fortunately ineffective. This failure still exasperated the miscreants. The captain knowing he was the main target of the attack, thought it prudent to retire from their view. They than again made an attempt to gain the poop ladder, throwing iron belaying pins at the officers. Their conduct had then assumed such a character that the captain considered it prudent to issue orders to his officers and constables that should the mutineers make any bolder attempt to come on the poop, they should be fired upon.
At length finding all their efforts useless, they let go the fore and foretopsail braces, and some of the studdingsail gear. It was blowing very fresh at the time, and the boatswain and other officers seeing the danger succeeded in making them that again. The mutineers finding they were not the strongest party, retired to the forecastle; one of them, however, returned and descended to the sleeping apartments of the single females, whose shrieks brought the first and second officers below.
This fellow being ordered by these officers to retire, attacked them with a bowie knife, but was eventually secured. As soon as this was done, the entrance to the main deck was strongly barricaded, and a strong guard set, composed of the constables, armed with muskets ands bayonets fixed, a guard was also set at night. The night however, passed without further disturbance.
The following day six of the mutinous party came aft and attempted to mount the poop, but were prevented; they then demanded an interview with the captain, which being granted, they immediately demanded fresh provisions, and refused unless the captain would grant such, to work the ship. And on receiving a reply in the negative, threatend to have his heart’s blood.

No further attempts were however subsequently made, a strong guard always kept until reaching the Cape of Good Hope, where the ringleaders of the mutiny were handed over to the police, and committed to take their trial. In order to save the ship from being detained, the offenders were summarily dealt with, and condemned to three months hard labour on the roads."
