Return to SA Passenger Lists,1847-1886

ship Lord Hungerford, 930 tons, Captain J.W. Hurst, from Plymouth 2nd August 1856, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 28th November 1856

16th ship from England to S.A. with government passengers for 1856 ; 8 births and 8 deaths on the passage ; William Leahy Echlin, surgeon-superintendent.

The Lord Hungerford arrived from Plymouth on the 28th November, after a passage of 119 days.
Eight births and eight deaths occurred at sea ; 300 souls were landed in the colony.
This vessel is well adapted for emigrants ; the people expressed themselves perfectly satisfied with their diet and treatment, and grateful for the kindness shown them by the surgeon-superintendent, as well as the master and officers of the ship.
This is the second voyage in which Mr. W.L. Echlin, the surgeon-superintendent, has brought emigrants to this colony, and on both occasions has done so in a most satisfactory manner — the regularity, discipline, and cleanliness of the people have been, on both occasions, most commendable.
Ninety-three nominated passengers arrived by this ship. The surgeon-superintendent informed me that he had reason to suspect that seven persons had come out under false names. I find that six of the seven were nominated emigrants.
I have written to some of the persons named as depositors, to ask whether the persons nominated by them had really arrived, but the reply to those inquiries has not given me the information desired, in so far as the persons who nominate are purchasers of land, who exercise their privilege, in many cases, to enable poor settlers to get their friends forwarded at little cost, and I have, as yet, been unable to trace whether or not there has been deception practised.
The seventh person named as having come out under a false name was selected by the agent at Plymouth, to whom I have written stating the suspicion, and requesting him to make inquiry whether or not the person selected by him under the name given had actually sailed.
The immigrants, by this ship, seem to have found ready employment, as all the people, with the exception of four persons, were discharged within a week after the arrival of the ship at the port.

From the Lord Hungerford, three families, 20 single men, and two single women, in all 32 souls, sailed immediately for Melbourne, no attempt having been made by these people to find employment in the colony ; but I am gratified to learn that this is the only ship, during the quarter, from which this species of emigration has taken place.
