Return to SA Passenger
Lists,1847-1886
ship Lord
Raglan,
758 tons, Captain G. Mitchell, from Plymouth 14th November 1855,
arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 7th February 1856
Friday February 7th, 1856:- the
ship Lord Raglan, 758 tons,
G. Mitchell, Master, from Plymouth November 14th.
Passengers: Mr. and Mrs
Litchford, family, and servant & Dr. Pridie, surgeon-superintendent in the
cabin and the following emigrants in the steerage. .
. . — 4th
ship from England to S.A. with government passengers for 1856 ; 2
births and 10 deaths on the passage ; Mr. Robert Pridie,
surgeon-superintendent.
ship Lord Raglan — extracted from
the South Australian Government Gazette 1856 page 326
and

|
.....The Lord Raglan arrived on the
7th February, with 286 immigrants, ten deaths and two
births
occurred before
final disembarkation.
I regret to say that fever of a
low nervous type prevailed during the voyage ; a fortnight
before the Ship's arrival, the Surgeon Superintendent
was seriously ill : the Hospital was full, and upwards
of thirty cases of fever were under treatment throughout
the ship — so that, in fact, there was
no separation between the sick and the healthy, and the
sickness was every
day increasing.
There were no buildings on shore into which to draft
the sick or the healthy, and it was essential, for the
safety of, all that a separation should be immediately
be made.
I engaged the services of Mr. Henry Thomas Parke, The
Surgeon Superintendent of the Australia to
take the medical charge on board, as the surgeon Superintendent
attached
to the Lord Raglan was unfit for duty.
In order to provide separate apartment for the treatment
of the sick, I caused
all the single Woman who where in health to be removed
to the depot ; and their part of the ship being airy
and well ventilated was converted into an hospital where
the sick were separately treated. I advised all healthy
persons on board, if they had friends in the Colony to
leave the ship, and by dilution of the poisonous atmosphere
the spread of the disease was greatly arrested and it
virulence diminished.
From this time, till the final disembarkation of the ship,
there was only one death on board in consequence of fever,
and only two new cases occurred during that time. At the
expiration of the lay days, the sick, about twenty in number
were sent to hospital : I am informed they all recovered,
with one exception, a man who sank in consequence of an
abscess on the liver.
The master of the ship, Mr. G. Mitchell,
from the time the surgeon was seized till the ship ...,
did most indefatigably and zealously at night and by day,
tend
and prescribed for the sick to the best of his ability
and judgment ; in consequence of which fatigue and exposure
to the noxious exhalations of the sick, he also sickened,
and was seriously ill.
Miss Mary Coghlan the Matron of
the ship, Mary Butler, Edward Coade, one of the constables,
and James Stirton, the hospital assistant, were most unceasing
in their devotion to the sick.
I most deeply regret that
Mr. Henry Thomas Parke, who took medical charge after arrival,
fell sacrifice to the fever which he caught on board. ...... |
