The Emigration Agent having reported to the Lieutenant Governor that there had been several cases of small-pox on board the emigrant ship Marion — of which two had terminated fatally fifty days prior to the ship's arrival — and the last case favourably, about thirty days since. The Colonial Surgeon was called upon to report immediately whether, under such circumstances, there was any fear of infection, and the following is a copy of that officer's letter on the subject, with which we have been favoured : —
Adelaide, Feb. 12, 1849.

Sir — I have the honour to state, for the information of
his Execellency the Lieutenant-Governor, that the contagion of small-pox has a latent period of from ten to fourteen, or, at the latest, to twenty-one days. Thirty days having elapsed without any fresh case having appeared, I do not consider it necessary that the Marion should be put into quarantine. I have, &c, James Geo. Nash.
