Return to SA Passenger Lists,1847-1886

barque Royal Charlie, 480 tons, Captain J.R. Thomas, from London 19th January & Plymouth 2nd February 1854, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 24th May 1854

South Australian Register Thursday 25th May 1854

Wednesday May 24th, 1854:- the barque Royal Charlie, 480 tons, Thomas, Master, from London & Southampton February 2nd.
11th ship from England to S.A. with government passengers for 1854 ; 12 births and 2 deaths on the passage ; J.S. Wilkinson, surgeon-superintendent.

barque Royal Charlie
The Government Emigrant-ship above named arrived yesterday in a Healthy condition. The departure from Southampton took place on the 2nd February. With the number of souls on board was 214 ; but as there were 12 births on the voyage, and only 3 deaths, the number of souls on arrival was 223.
Emigrants from English Counties predominate on board the Royal Charlie ; as the ship is already in the harbour, employers will have an early opportunity of selecting suitable persons.
Dr Duncan the health Officer, intended to pay a visit of inspection yesterday, and there was ever reason to believe that his report would be favourable.
We take this occasion to state that the John Bunyan is also in the harbour.

BPP 1854-55 (42) Papers relative to Emigration to Australian Colonies part I. New South Wales and Australia; Part II S. and W. Australia, Van Diemen's Land
The "Royal Charlie" arrived from Southampton on the 24th of May, after a passage of 123 [or 128] days, bringing to the colony 223 souls ; 13 births and two deaths occurred at sea. There was much dissatisfaction and discontent in this ship, which seemed to have been caused by a want of judicious management of the people. The medical comforts were given away without proper discretion during the early part of the voyage, and were all expended long before the vessel arrived in this port. This, with other evidences of injudicious management were apparent.
