Passengers—Dr. W. H. Pearce (Surgeon-Superintendent), in the cabin ; and 274 Government emigrants in the steerage:—

REMINISCENCES OF AN EARLY VOYAGE

We have received from Dr. William H Pearse (senior physician of the Plymouth Public Dispensary) a pamphlet entitled "Instances of Immunity," which contains an interesting resume of an unpleasant episode on board the emigrant ship Tarquin, a vessel of 685 tons, that arrived in South Australia 40 years ago. Dr. Pearse was surgeon-superintendent on the Tarquin, which sailed from Plymouth on August 20, 1864, having previously embarked 137 men, 81 women, and 56 children under 12 years of age. Dr. Pearse gives the following particulars of the voyage:— 'The day after we sailed a well-marked case of smallpox appeared ; it ran a severe and confluent course. The captain wished to put back to Plymouth, but I decided that we should go on. The forecastle was what is known as a booby forecastle, occupied only by the windlass and boatswain's stores. The ship's crew lived in a house on deck. The booby forcastle was about 4½ ft. in height. I boarded off half of this low forecastle on the port side, and fitted a swinging canvas screen as a door. Here I put the patient, telling off a man who was well marked with smallpox from early life as nurse and attendant. The w.c. for the men was about 6 ft. distant. The crew had constant access to the other half of the forecastle for their necessary gear. The 105 single men, who were berthed in the fore end of the 'tween decks, had access to the upper deck through the forehatch only, and were thus ever passing by and near the smallpox sick bay ; they were also restricted, for purposes of discipline, on the upper deck, to the fore end of the ship. Of course, I issued strict orders that no one was to enter the sick bay. The man nurse, and myself did all the cleaning, feeding, and other attentions ; but I found constantly, when in the stormy southern latitudes, and when running down our 160 deg. of easting, and during a period of nearly two months, that men would enter, out of the stormy winds and seas, and stay with the patient and nurse, in order to smoke their pipes. No other case of smallpox happened during the voyage. We had a long voyage of 105 days, and had scarlet fever and smallpox among the emigrants, I vaccinated about 300 times ; 130 were successfully vaccinated. Many of the 300 vaccinations were twice in the same individual. I started revaccination at once after the appearance of the case of smallpox. I had both points and tubes supplied by the Government authorities. As soon as I got one or more successful arms I mustered men and women on deck, and did as many vaccinations as the vaccine venicles could supply. I thus kept up a succession of arm-to-arm successful vaccinations." The doctor emphasizes the fact that he had a series of successful arms up to 90 days at sea, and there, according to current theories, the same persons were susceptible to smallpox ; and adds:— 'It is obvious that the immunity of the people was not due to my revaccination, as these were gradually done, week after week, even up to the fourteenth week. Nor can I assert that the immunity was due to this community of emigrants having, in general, at embarkation good marks of early life vaccination, be cause out of 274 emigrants on board, of whom 56 were under 12 years of age, I obtained 136 successful arms. The vaccine prophylaxis was thus in general greatly expired. The fact remains that this crowded community, whilst susceptible to vaccine lymph was immune to smallpox contagion or infection. Were my people in one of their periodical cycles of natural immunity, which, more or less, are common to all the infective fevers, or was there some subtle stability of their bioplasmac molecular bonds, produced by the unknown but vast changes of environment involved in being launched from their habituated conditions and co-relations to the sea climates?'

ARRIVAL OF THE TARQUIN WITH GOVERNMENT IMMIGRANTS.

From her appearance the Tarquin is a well-selected vessel, especially as from her light draught of water the bars were no obstacle to her progress into harbor. On her arrival the Assistant Health Officer having discovered that a single case of smallpox had occurred during the early part of the voyage, and seven of fever at a later period, she was placed in quarantine till the following morning, when Dr. Duncan was satisfied by his enquiries that she was in a perfectly healthy state, and at once accorded pratique. The master was here some years back in the Eliza, and Dr. Pearce, the Surgeon Superintendent, has made several voyages in the service and has always been singularly successful in bringing out his charge, and on the present occasion, though threatened with such a fearful out break his attention and skill averted the calamity, and having but two births and the same number of deaths the people on board remain at 273. The immigrants are spoken of as of the usual class, there being amongst them a large proportion of assisted passage ticket holders ; but when the Shipping Reporter was alongside no one was allowed to board, consequently another opportunity will offer of inspecting the vessel and her occupants.
