Saint John, N.B. Customs
House Passenger Lists 1815, 1832, 1833-1834 & 1837-1838
1815 - 1832 - 1833
- 1834 - 1837 - 1838
The Lieutenant Governor, Council and Assembly of New Brunswick
enacted a provincial statute in 1832, entitled "An Act to Regulate
Vessels Arriving from the United Kingdom with Passengers and Emigrants"
(2 William IV Chapter 36). The statute imposed a duty of five shillings
for each passenger landed which was to be paid by the Master of the ship.
The funds collected by the Treasury, were to be directed toward the caring
for ill and destitute immigrants. It is in this manner, that all cargo
manifests, including the passenger lists, became part of the Customs House
records retained by the province. In 1835, the provincial Secretary was
given responsibilty for all Customs House returns (5 William IV Chapter
49).
On June 29th 1877 the "Great Fire
of Saint John" engulfed the business district, destroying more
than twenty-five public buildings, including the Customs House. A new
Customs Building was built in the same location, and the lists below were
discovered in an old vault in that building. These lists appear to be
the only surviving passenger records for the port of Saint John for this
period, and contain the names of more than 10,500 passengers and crew
(some men worked their passage).
(The records for the "Famine" period might have been in the
possession of Moses H. Perley, the Emigration Agent at Saint John 1845-1850,
and whose personal papers were lost in a subsequent fire. Saint John
passenger
lists from 1900 onwards, are microfilmed, and are available from The
Library and Archives, Canada.)
Every effort has been made to correctly transcribe the names represented
on the passenger lists below, but be aware of possible errors or omissions.
The lists are not uniform in the amount of information they may contain
and there are many spelling variatons even for some quite common names.
There was no way to interpret whether the abbreviation Jno. was being
used to represent John or Jonathan, so "John" has been used
in each instance.
Note: #1. As it was not required to pay passage or landing
tax for infants (under 1 year), they do not appear to have been included
on most of the lists. In some lists where no name for infants is mentioned,
they are indicated as (unnamed infant). #2.
The ships sailing from Belfast appear to contain several "English"
passengers, although they are not identified as such. #3.
On the lists on which two arrival dates are shown, the earlier date indicates
the ship arrival at the quarantine station at Partridge Island; the second
date is when the list was received at the Customs House at St. John after
being cleared by the Health Officer at quarantine. All ship arrivals below
are arranged chronologically in order of the ships' arrival at St. John.
